Can I Get Liraglutide Online?

Results from the National Health and Nutrition Survey showed that almost one-half of US adults were trying to lose weight in the 12 months before the survey. More women (56.4%) admitted to working hard to shed those excess pounds than men (41.7%).

Weight loss strategies included:

  • Exercising (62.9%)
  • Cutting calories (62.9%)
  • Eating healthier foods (50.4%)

Novo Nordisk is a pharmaceutical company that has noticed the demand for weight loss products and has made a concerted effort to provide weight management solutions.

What Are GLP-1 Agonist Medications?

Glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) medications are used to treat type 2 diabetes and to support weight management. As agonists, they mimic the activity of natural GLP-1 that is produced in the cells lining the gastrointestinal tract (gut).

There are currently three main classes of FDA-approved GLP-1 agonist medications:

  • Semaglutide: Wegovy, Ozempic and Rybelsus
  • Liraglutide: Saxenda and Victoza
  • Dulaglutide: Trulicity

How Do GLP-1 Agonists Help With Blood Sugar Control?

GLP-1 agonists mimic the activity of the incretin hormone GLP-1. This hormone is released from cells lining the gastrointestinal tract after eating. GLP-1 binds to receptors in the pancreas, stimulating insulin release. This is the primary mechanism of action when these medications are used to treat type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is a chronic disease in which insulin is not used effectively, or the pancreas does not produce enough insulin.

While not a first-line medication to treat type 2 diabetes, these medications can increase insulin levels and the number of insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, bringing blood glucose levels into a normal range. Abnormal blood glucose levels can increase the risk of blood vessel damage and cardiovascular disease.

Patients who were prescribed GLP-1 agonists noticed that they also lost weight. Besides stimulating insulin release, GLP-1 agonist medications:

  • Decrease glucose production in the liver
  • Improve insulin sensitivity
  • Slow stomach emptying
  • Promote feelings of satiety in the brain

Together, these effects cause people to feel more satisfied with their food, leading to a reduced calorie intake. GLP-1 produced in the body has a very short half-life, lasting only about 2 minutes.

Liraglutide was FDA-approved in 2010 as an adjunct to diet and exercise to treat type 2 diabetes. Liraglutide has a half-life of 13.1 hours, making it much more effective than natural GLP-1. In clinical trials, participants taking liraglutide lost an average of six pounds. Nausea was the biggest side effect. However, it was resolved within about six weeks.

Novo Nordisk manufactures both Victoza and Saxenda. Victoza is FDA-approved to treat type 2 diabetes, and Saxenda is approved for chronic weight management in adults and obesity in adolescents aged 12 to 17.

The medical indications for Saxenda and Wegovy are identical. It is intended for use in adults with an initial body mass index (BMI) of

• 30 kg/m2 or greater (obesity) or

• 27 kg/m2 or greater (overweight) with at least one weight-related medical condition, such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, or abnormal blood lipids.

Both Saxenda and Victoza are injectables that come in pre-filled pens.

What Are Liraglutide’s Side Effects?

Liraglutide and semaglutide both warn that these medications should not be used by people with a history of multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 (MEN2) or a family history of thyroid cancer. Animal studies showed that liraglutide and semaglutide increased the risk of thyroid cancer. It is not known if this risk would also be increased in humans. You shouldn’t use liraglutide if you have/are:

  • A known allergy to liraglutide or any of the medication’s components
  • A history of depression or thoughts of suicide
  • Taking insulin or another medication with liraglutide in it
  • Pregnant

More common side effects associated with liraglutide use include:

  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal pain
  • Acid reflux
  • Gas
  • Dry mouth
  • Intestinal infections
  • Low blood sugar

Rare side effects include:

  • Inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis)
  • Gallbladder disease (infection or gallstones)

In most cases, gastrointestinal side effects decreased over time. However, in most cases, people taking liraglutide do not stop taking it due to side effects.

How Do You Take Liraglutide?

Both Saxenda and Victoza are injected just under the skin using single-dose pen injectors. Inject these medications into the fatty tissue under the skin of your abdomen, upper arm, or thigh. Your healthcare provider will provide instructions on how to inject the medication, and then you will be able to give yourself your dose.
