Coverage For Obesity Treatment
While private and public health insurance carriers rarely covered treatment for obesity in the past, times are changing, especially since a better understanding of the biochemistry behind obesity and its metabolic effect led to its classification as a chronic disease by the U.S. government in 2004 and by the American Medical Association in 2013.
Especially important is the understanding that while a low-calorie diet and exercise can lead to weight loss, a change in physiology can make it easier to regain lost weight.
A 2017 study found that among 136 marketplace health insurance plans, 11% of plans covering nine states had some coverage for drugs to treat obesity. Medicare policy excludes drug therapy for obesity. Seven state Medicare programs offer drug coverage.
The 2019 Health Reform and Health Mandates for Obesity notes that:
- 23 states have a specific health requirement to cover bariatric or gastric surgery
- 16 states now include at least some coverage and reimbursement for dietary and nutritional screening, counseling, and therapy for obesity, and an additional seven states offer coverage if the diagnosis is related to obesity
- 50 states are required to cover obesity screening for all adults and children
- 42 states offer coverage for nutritional counseling, 23 states offer prescription therapy for obesity, and 43 states cover bariatric surgery for state employees

Wegovy™ Prescription Coverage
Wegovy™ is a prescription brand name medication that is covered by patent protection for the next 20 years, which means that Novo Nordisk owns sole rights to sell Wegovy™ and, therefore, can price it as a monopoly. The manufacturer offers discounts for people who are insured and meet the program qualifications.
A better understanding of the physiology behind obesity makes it more likely that insurance companies will expand coverage for obesity medications, such as semaglutide.
