Yohimbine is an indole alkaloid derived from the bark of the Yohimbe tree, an evergreen tree found in West Africa. Yohimbine was initially used as an aphrodisiac to enhance sexual performance and then as a treatment for erectile dysfunction. Yohimbine blocks alpha-1 and alpha-2 adrenoceptors. It increases adrenaline and dopamine levels and decreases serotonin. Yohimbine is a monoamine oxidase inhibitor and therefore has the potential to interact with tyramine-containing foods. Yohimbine affects the gastrointestinal, genitourinary, respiratory, cardiovascular, and central nervous systems. It increases heart rate and blood pressure and increases brain stimulation. Overdosage can cause irregular heartbeat, fast heartbeat, high blood pressure and central nervous system depression, even coma.
